Phillip Odell Higgs, Sr. of Uvalde passed away on December 1, 2015 in Amistad Nursing Home at the age of 84. He was born on March 14, 1931 in Durham, NC to Charlie Higgs and Mattie Hawkins Higgs. He is survived by five daughters, Leslie Barnes of Lakewood Village, TX; Kathy Carroll of Pasadena, TX; Sandra Scott of Houston, TX; Debbie McNiel of McKinney, TX; and Debra Higgs of Lompac, CA; two sons, Phillip Higgs, Jr. of Copperhill, TN and Bobby Higgs of Grand Fork, ND; companion of ten years, Carla Alexander of Rio Frio; 13 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; and nephew, Billy Wagoner of Hillsborough, NC. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Bertice Higgs. Phil graduated from Hillsborough High School in Hillsborough, NC. He retired from the USAF after 20 years of service to our country. While in the Air Force, he attended numerous schools. He then worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 22 years. He retired in 1993 as Supervisor of Postal Operations. He was a well-known caregiver, taking care of his wife during a long illness. He was a member of American Legion Post 26 where he served as Post Commander, as well as other positions in this post. Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 4, 2015 at 1:00 PM at Rushing-Estes-Knowles Mortuary with burial following in Hillcrest Cemetery. Rev. Tony Gruben will officiate. Pallbearers will be Jason Barnes, Gary McNiel, B.J. Scott, James Carroll, Jace McNiel, and Daniel Gonzales. Honorary pallbearers will be Chase Schutter, Rhett Schutter, and Oscar Barnes. Memorial donations may be made to American Legion Post 26 in Uvalde.
