Richard (Dick) Dwight Story, born on August 25, 1935, in Hammond, Indiana and raised in Des Moines, Iowa, passed away on January 15, 2025, at Uvalde Memorial Hospital. He leaves behind a rich legacy as a talented artist in carpentry and engraving, with a distinctive craftsmanship that will be remembered by all who had the pleasure of experiencing his work.
Dick’s artistic talents were particularly showcased through his beautiful belt buckles crafted for the stock show, as well as his intricate engravings on an array of items including guns, knives, and various custom works of art. Some of his work is on display at the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum in Waco, Texas. In addition to his artistry, Dick built and remodeled countless homes and structures in Sabinal and the surrounding area, often including custom and unique cabinetry, and sometimes even designing and building the furniture for these homes.
A lifelong learner, Dick reveled in knowing and sharing the minutia and details of whatever caught his attention, whether that be an old film or a bit of WWII history. His enthusiasm included various hobbies and interests, notably his collections of antique guns, coins, and sheet music. As a child he was active in his father’s jazz band, playing drums while his sister sang and their father played piano at local dances and on the radio. Dick served for 2 years in the US Army, and then earned a Bachelor’s degree in History from Drake University.
His commitment to public service was evident, having served as the mayor of Sabinal, a member of the Masonic Lodge, and president of the Sabinal ISD School Board. He found solace and camaraderie within the Sabinal Methodist Church, where he was also a cherished member of the Uvalde Methodist Choir.
He is survived by his son, Richard D. Story Jr. (Kelli Story) of Tacoma, WA; daughter Lisa of Algonquin, Il; sons Gregory Story (Clark Miller) of Chicago, IL; and Michael Story (Katie Story) of Uvalde; and his sister Judi Norman, of Des Moines, IA and her family; He is also survived by his 8 grandchildren Nicki, Rickey, Sophie, Amanda, Audrey, Dalton, Marlowe, and Tatum; Richard is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Marjetta Story; brother Bob Story; sister Vera Jean Merritt, and his parents, Virgil and Opal Green Story. His memory will also live on through his 6 great grandchildren and many more family and friends.
The funeral service for Richard Dwight Story will be held on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Sabinal Methodist Church. Friends and family are encouraged to gather and celebrate the life of a man whose contributions and love enriched the lives of many in his community. He will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who knew him. Pallbearers are Gerry Shudde, Greg Bales, Sidney Clary, Bobby McIntosh, Al Haughey, Tedd Norman, and Todd Norman, In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to Sabinal Methodist Church or Wounded Warriors Project.
