Rogelio “Roy” Luevano of Uvalde, Texas, passed away on December 25th, 2020 at the age of 79. He was born on September 27, 1941 in Uvalde, Texas to Agapito and Cleofas Luevano.
He married Irma Pena Luevano on January 28, 1962 in Uvalde, Texas.
Roy was a 1960 graduate of Uvalde High School. He then completed a 21 year career in the USAF, and as a Vietnam veteran, was a recipient of the Air Force Presidential Unit Citation. After retiring from the Air Force he returned to Uvalde with his family and continued working regionally as a radiology technician. He also graduated from Texas State University with a BAAS degree in Health Administration. Roy attained several significant accomplishments including having been chosen to serve as a member of the UCISD school board, elected as the first Mexican-American Mayor of Uvalde, and developed and instructed the AAS Radiologic Technology program at Southwest Texas Junior College. He held a firm belief to always help others in need, and above all he was a devoted family man who loved his children, grandchildren, and most recently his great-grandchildren who affectionately nicknamed him “NoGo”.
He is survived by his wife, Irma Luevano of Uvalde, Texas; two daughters, Gina Dietrich of Uvalde, Texas, and Monica DeLeon of Uvalde, Texas; one son, Rogelio “Roy” Luevano Jr., of Dallas, Texas; three brothers, Freddy Luevano and wife Odilia of Boerne, Texas, Agapito “Pete” Luevano and wife Olga of Uvalde, Texas, and Hector Luevano and wife Noemi of Uvalde, Texas; six grandchildren, Garrett Dietrich, Alexandra Dietrich, Ariana DeLeon and Alina DeLeon, all of Uvalde, Texas, Misty Gutierrez of San Antonio, Texas and Wendy Gutierrez of Houston, Texas; and eight great-grandchildren Lola Dietrich of Uvalde, Texas, Layla Dietrich of Uvalde, Texas, Robert Gutierrez Jr of San Antonio, Texas, Angel Gutierrez of San Antonio, Texas, Kaley Smith of San Antonio, Texas,Ashlyn Smith of San Antonio, Texas, Gabriel Gutierrez Jr., of Houston, Texas, and Benny Gutierrez of Houston, Texas.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Agapito and Cleofas Luevano; brothers, Enrique Luevano, Alfonso Luevano, and Antonio Luevano Sr.; sisters, Maria Delgado, Elena Aguilar, and Rebecca Torres; son-in-law, Mark Dietrich; and nephews, Matthew Luevano, and Aaron Luevano.
Roy was a strong and determined father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He is and will always be loved and cherished dearly by all those whose lives he touched.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, January 1, 2021 at 11:00 AM at Hillcrest Cemetery. A visitation will be held on December 31, 2020 from 12PM-9PM at Rushing-Estes-Knowles Mortuary.
