Roland Adam Howard of Uvalde passed away on December 19, 2010 at the age of 88. He was born on August 12, 1922 in Devine, TX to Raymond and Oneda Mayhugh Howard.
After graduating from Alice High School in 1940, Roland attended AI College at Kingsville majoring in agriculture. He learned to fly in the Civilian Pilot Training Program in 1942. In 1943, Roland began instructing primary cadets at Garner Field in Uvalde. There he met Maxine Spurgeon and they were married on June 2, 1944. Roland entered active service with the Army Air Forces in November 1944 serving on Okinawa until November 1946.
He began dairy farming on Benson Road in 1947 in partnership with his father until 1968. He worked with the State of Texas until retiring in 1988.
Roland took up bicycling, wood carving, and model railroading. Following retirement, he and Maxine enjoyed traveling, and later volunteering at the Garner Field Museum in Uvalde.
Roland is survived by his wife of 66 years two sons, Dean Howard and wife, Laurie of San Antonio and Douglas Howard and wife, Peggy of Austin daughter, Dayna Cunningham and husband, Kent of Uvalde three sisters, Nelda Kelly and husband, Kenneth, and Lanell Kelly all of Magnolia and Betty Flournoy of Wimberly and grandchildren, Ashley Howard and wife, Brenda of Castrovile Sam and Scout Howard of Austin Traci Schulte and husband, Eric of Groton, Connecticut Thiess Cunningham of San Marcos and Justin Howard of Texas City and greatgrandson, Daniel Schulte of Groton, Connecticut. He was preceded in death by his parents daughter, Donna Howard, and son, Richard Howard. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, December 23, 2010, at 2:00 PM at RushingEstesKnowles Chapel with burial to follow in Hillcrest Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Ashley Howard Theiss Cunningham C.A. Stein Kent Cunningham Dean Howard and Doug Howard.
