After a valiant fight against cancer, Charles Rothe Cox lost the battle at his residence on February 9, 2016 at the age of 74.
Rothe, as he was known to his many friends and family, was born October 26, 1941 to Horace M. and Annette Rothe Cox in San Antonio, Texas. He attended schools in San Antonio, graduated from Central Catholic High School and also attended St. Mary's University before enlisting in the Marine Corps. After his discharge, he worked with his father in his grandfather's business, Cox Lumber Company in San Antonio. In 1970, he moved to Uvalde with his childhood friend, Phil Grothues, to assist in the operation of Lumbermart.
Rothe was a servant in many ways: to his country as a Marine in Company C First Battalion Infantry Training Regiment stationed in Chu Lai, South Viet Nam; to his church, not only as a member of First United Methodist Church but as committee chairman and liaison for building projects throughout the years, and to his family and friends. His interest in history and love of the Rothe family heritage prompted him to research and ultimately write about it in a self-published book.
After his retirement from the lumber business he enlisted as a full-time grandpa, running a shuttle service from Brackettville to Uvalde for his granddaughter Morgan, from Uvalde to Fredericksburg and back for his mother-in law, Dottie, as well as pickup and delivery man from Kyndall's and Landen's schools. He and Sandra traveled frequently, enjoying trips earned through his work and later with his brother and sisters and brother-in-laws. In October 2015, they traveled to Costa Rica where they both rode the zip line and trekked several miles through the rain forest. He was a trooper!
Survivors include Sandra, his wife of 36 years; sons Toby Cox, Jim Welch & wife Lauri of Uvalde, Tully Welch & wife Cindy of Del Rio; grandchildren Kyndall Welch, Morgan Welch & Landen Welch, Macie Kruse (James) and Vance Rietz; brothers Kenny (Margie) Cox, Billy (Barbara) Cox; sisters: Cheri (Clay) DeSalme, Mary (Bill) Watts, Chris (Ernest) Smith, and Laurie Cox, numerous nieces and nephews; aunt, Stella Rothe, and special cousin Walt (Kathy) Rothe, sister-in-law Joyce (David) Brown and sister-in-law Barbara (Ronny) Mabe. Rothe was preceded in death by his parents and beloved in-laws Jimmie & Dottie Garey.
