Samuel Spurgeon

Samuel Clifford Spurgeon of San Antonio, formerly of Uvalde, passed away on July 11, 2014 at his residence at the age of 92. He was born on June 28, 1922 in Brownwood, TX to Harvey Samuel and Leona Clifford Spurgeon. He was a graduate of Uvalde High School and he started his military career upon graduation. He enlisted in the Army in 1941, and in 1942 he volunteered to be transferred to the Martin Aircraft Co. to learn how to service bombers because he had dreamed of becoming a flyer since the age of ten. By April 1943, he had graduated and was sent to Austin, TX to learn to fly. He decided to stay in the service, and did so for 23 years. He retired at that time with the rank of Major. The family stated that it was Sams love of flying which kept him going. He participated in all four major invasions in Europe. According to the family, Sam enjoyed his service to his country and had no regrets. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Marcella Rambie Spurgeon of San Antonio daughter, Sandra Pastore of New Jersey son, Alan Spurgeon and spouse, Jay of Seattle, WA sisters, Wanda Stein of LaCoste, TX Maxine Howard of Uvalde Faye Henry and husband, Bud of Sabinal and Margie Rambo of Junction stepchildren, Ron Copenhaver and wife, Kelly of California Bill Copenhaver Guy Copenhaver and wife, Lori and Karen Spencer and husband, Joe, all of San Antonio and Candy Loessburg and husband, James of Uvalde and numerous grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents brothers, Herman and Lynn Spurgeon sister, Betty Muecke and son, Samuel Cliff Spurgeon, Jr. Viewing will be from 1:00900 pm on Wednesday, July 16, 2014. Graveside services will be held on Thursday, July 17, 2014 at 4:00 PM at Uvalde Cemetery.
