Shirley Lee Cooper passed away peacefully in her sleep March 19, 2020 at The Veranda Assisted Living Residence of Uvalde. She was born to Egon Rudolph and Thelma Lee Wegner on February 14, 1938, in Pawnee, Texas. She attended Ray High School in Corpus Christi with her life-long friends Jeanette Moody and Ruby Neuman.
She met and married Philip Cooper in 1963 and moved to Uvalde in 1970. She was an active member of the Lutheran Church, and worked as a teacher at Trinity Lutheran Day Care. She also was a devoted homemaker and dedicated volunteer in church, Girl Scouts, and wherever she saw the need. In their retirement, Shirley and Phil enjoyed traveling throughout the US and enjoyed visiting Canada, Mexico, and Guatemala multiple times. Friends and family will remember Shirley and her fondness of the color red, especially her red lipstick.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Phillip J Cooper; her parents, Egon and Thelma Wegner; her brother Monroe William (Billy) Wegner of Holland, TX, and sister Jeanette Marie Tims of Pflugerville, TX.
She is survived by her brother Egon Ray Wegner and wife Courtney of Ellensburg, WA; her sister-in-law, Milagros (Mila) Wegner of Taylor, TX ; her children Michael Graham of Katy, TX, Randy Smith of George West, TX, and Kathy Cooper of Uvalde; 2 grandchildren: James Lucio of Chappel Hill, TX, and Faith Lucio-Sleeper of Leander, TX; and 4 great-grandchildren: Jason Lucio, Railee Lucio-Priester, Jordan Lucio, and Talius Lucio-Sleeper; as well as 9 nieces, 3 nephews, many great-nieces and great-nephews, and numerous dear friends.
A memorial service will be held at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Knippa, date to be determined. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association to help fight Alzheimrer’s (https://alz.org).
