Thomas Browne DuBose

December 4, 1934 — April 2, 2025

Uvalde

Thomas Browne DuBose, 90, of Uvalde, Texas passed away peacefully on April 2, 2025, at The Veranda Senior Living in Uvalde, Texas, surrounded by his loved ones.

He was born on December 4, 1934, in San Antonio, Texas and was raised on a ranch Northeast of Uvalde, Texas. He attended school in Uvalde and graduated from Uvalde High School in 1953. On July 2, 1954, Tom married fellow Uvaldean Estelle Armistead, the love of his life. He graduated in 1957 from Texas A&I in Kingsville with a degree in Agricultural Education. Following his graduation, Tom and Estelle returned to Uvalde and began raising their four children: Amelia “Amy” DuBose McGehee, Allison DuBose Tomas, Winford “Win” DuBose and Sarah DuBose McSween. He began his professional life teaching physical science at West Main School in Uvalde and then went on to become a rancher and vocational agriculture teacher. He taught at Uvalde High school for a total of 18 years. Tom served two terms on the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District Board of Trustees, was president of Uvalde County Farm Bureau, president of the American Cancer Society of Uvalde County, and also served as president of Uvalde Lions Club. Outside of his professional endeavors, Tom reveled in life's simple pleasures. His skills as an excellent calf roper took him across the State of Texas. Tom’s musical talents were no less remarkable; he was a renaissance man able to play any instrument he could lay hands on and became particularly enamored with the banjo, sharing his joy through performances with the band "Wylie and the Coyotes". His artistry was not confined to melodies; Tom expressed his creativity through wood carving, leather tooling, drawing, and crafting everything from firearms to spinning wheels. Tom also excelled at storytelling and was a skilled and prolific writer. He won the annual Uvalde Leader News Hunting Story contest many times, and was a frequent contributor to the Letters to the Editor. He is also the author of “The Truth and Then Some”, a collection of his favorite tales of life in South Texas.

Undoubtedly, his family was his greatest pleasure. Nothing gave him more joy than to play with his grandchildren and teach them about the beauty of nature, the importance of faith, and the value to be found in honesty and kindness. Tom is survived by a loving family who will carry forward his legacy of faith, integrity and kindness; his devoted wife of 70 years, Estelle Armistead DuBose, their children: Allison Tomas (Don) of Sylva, North Carolina; Win DuBose (Camile) of Uvalde, Sarah McSween (Paul) of San Antonio, and son in law Dennis McGehee (Tane) of Uvalde, 13 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren (with one on the way). Tom is also survived by two sisters, Jane Dreyfus (Seymour), and Marcy Gauntt, widowed by her husband affectionately known as Uncle Chocolate.

He was preceded in death by his father, Winford Odell DuBose, his mother, Sarah Albert Browne, his daughter Amy DuBose McGehee, and his stepmother, Annie Lee Ramsey Nickerson.

Each of these loved ones helped shape the man he became, and his memory will forever echo in the hearts of those he leaves behind. Thomas Browne DuBose's life was a celebration of learning, love, faith and laughter. In every endeavor and interaction, he demonstrated how life should be embraced with an open heart and a curious mind. His spirit will continue to inspire those who had the privilege to know him, forever etched in the stories they tell and the lives he touched.

There will be a visitation at Rushing-Estes-Knowles on Sunday, April 6th from 2:00PM-5:00PM followed by a 10AM service on Monday April 7th at St. Philips Episcopal Church. After the church service there will be a reception followed by a burial at Hillcrest Cemetery at 1:30PM.

Honored to serve as pallbearers will be Win DuBose, Don Tomas, Paul McSween III, Dennis McGehee, Paul McSween IV, Thomas McSween, Benjamin McSween, Ford DuBose and Wesley DuBose.
