Timothy Ben Ortiz was born on March 15, 1960 in Houston, Texas, the first in a set of twins and the fourth child of Larry Nannie Ortiz. He attended Jersey Village High School and enjoyed being an active member of the fishing club, playing trumpet in the Jersey Village High School band, and was an accomplished craftsman in woodworking winning several competitions with his pieces.
After graduation, Tim went to work as a carpenter and moved to Uvalde in 1991 with his family. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and attending and participating in his childrens extracurricular activities. He was also an active member of the First Baptist Church where he taught Sunday School and sang bass in the adult choir, though he was known to nod off occasionally.
In 2001, he moved back to Houston and achieved an electrician license in 2005. With his children grown, he was able to spend more time pursuing his favorite hobbies, which he chose to spend with his beloved nephew, James. The two spent many weekends together enjoying all things outdoors, including hunting, shooting guns, and riding ATVs.
After suffering two years of illness, he died of related complications at Cornerstone Hospital of Houston on August 31, 2013 at the age of 53. He was preceded in death by his sister, Glenda Ben Madalena.
He is survived by his parents, Larry and Nannie Ortiz daughter Brandy Davis and husband Jonathon of Josephine, Texas son Gary Mizell and wife Kaile of Austin and daughter Neva Alejandro and husband Luke of Carrizo Springs also by grandchildren Jack and August Mizell and Sophie and Eliana Alejandro. He is also survived by his sister Lari Ann Ott and husband Dave of Colorado, brother Michael Ortiz of California, twin brother Robert Ortiz and wife Janet of Houston, and brotherinlaw Richard Madalena of Freeport, Texas, as well as numerous nieces and nephews and friends.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 6, 2013 at 2:00 PM at RushingEstesKnowles Mortuary with burial to follow in Hillcrest Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Gary Mizell, Luke Alejandro, Jonathon Davis, Robert Ortiz, Mason Griffith and James Ortiz.
