John Walton Raine of San Antonio, age 87, passed away on April 23, 2015. He was born on December 7, 1927 in Uvalde, TX to Edith and Randolph Raine. In 1946, after graduating from Uvalde High School, Walton enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he served in Guam and Siapan. After his discharge, he married Virginia Rose Monkhouse in 1949. He graduated from the University of Texas and remained an avid Longhorn fan throughout his life.
After relocating in Uvalde in 1953, Walton joined his father, Randolph, at Raine's Insurance Agency selling insurance and years later sold real estate. He was a respected businessman and a true gentleman. In 1978 he married Iva Brame of San Antonio. They moved there permanently in 1983, but Walton continued to do business in Uvalde and enjoyed his weekly visits there.
Church was always an important part of Walton's life. He was a member of the First Baptist church of Uvalde for over 40 years and after relocating to San Antonio, he moved his membership to Alamo Heights United Methodist Church. There he became an active member of the Seekers Sunday School class.
From 1961-1995 he was the Civil Defense Coordinator for Uvalde. He was a member of the American Legion for over 40 years. Spending time at his ranch was always a favorite pastime. He enjoyed countless hours of making improvements and completing projects with his close friend Steve Hoag.
He was preceded in death by his wife Iva Altgelt Raine. He is survived by three daughters, Melinda Gibson (Mike) of Keller, Melodie Waters (Bo) of Burleson, Michelle Gunnin (Cameron) of San Antonio and one son, Chris Brame (Pam) of Roundrock. He is also survived by his grandchildren Trey Gibson, Lauren Gage, Leigh Worthley, Beth Wester, Cameron Dane Gunnin, Emma Gunnin, Bill Brame, Gillian Brame, and Luke Brame. He was blessed with nine great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Charles Raine (Margaret) of Uvalde and his nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 1, at First Baptist Church in Uvalde. Interment will follow at Uvalde Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Trey Gibson, Tom Worthley, Travis Wester, Cameron Gunnin, Chris Brame, and Don Lee Little. Honorary Pallbearers are Andy Gage, Steve Hoag, Woods A. Howard and friends from the Seekers class of Alamo Heights United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers contributions in memory of Walton can be made to the First Baptist Church in Uvalde or to a ministry of your choice.
