Wanda Clayton left this world to be with her Savior, Jesus Christ Monday, April 13, 2020.
Wanda Ferrel Iden was born in Winters, Texas, July 9, 1923, to James A. Iden and Nora Wilkerson Iden. Later, the family moved to Howard County, Texas where she graduated from Ackerly High School in 1941. Wanda met and married Clyde Winans in 1943. After a short time in California where their daughters, Sue and Janice were born, the family moved to Big Spring, TX and subsequently settled in O’Donnell in the mid 1950’s. In 1960 Wanda started her career as tax collector/assessor for the O’Donnell ISD and remained in this position until her retirement in 1987 after 27 years of public service.
After Clyde’s passing in 1987, Wanda married Wayne Clayton in 1988 and relocated to Lubbock shortly after. Until Wayne’s health declined they enjoyed similar pleasures such as traveling, reading, and sports, as well as visiting their respective families. After Wayne’s passing in 1993, Wanda continued her love of friendships and activities -Texas Tech sports, theatre events, world travel, extensive reading and involvement in many bridge clubs.
In 2010, Wanda moved to Uvalde, Texas where she lived for six years with her daughter Janice and late husband, Bill McWhorter, before moving to the Veranda in 2016. While in Uvalde, she attended The First Baptist Church of Uvalde and enjoyed forming many lasting friendships while studying God’s Word as a member of the Agape Sunday School Class.
The family would like thank Tru Hiatt and her staff at The Veranda Senior Living for their care and providing wonderful activities and events for all their residents and a special heartfelt thank you to Wanda’s wonderful longtime caregivers Genevieve Soliz, Cruz Ramos, Rosebud Ramos, Brenda Saiz, and Diana Carreon, who took such special care of her these last two years.
