On December 18, 2012, Wayland Roger Smith went to be with his Lord and Savior. He was born on a ranch between Rocksprings and Sonora in Edwards County October 19th, 1923. The family moved to a ranch near Batesville in 1929. Wayland started school there and finished in Uvalde.
During World War II, he was an aircraft mechanic at Garner Field in Uvalde and also in Hondo. During this time he married Mary Gene Cordray July 6th, 1945. They made their home on a farm south of Sabinal until their deaths.
Wayland farmed and ranched his entire life. He spent 23 years working for Sabinal Auto Sales.
He was preceded in death by his parents, JJ and Daisy Smith and his wife Mary Gene. He is survived by his two children Denise Cordray and her husband Gene of Hemphill, Texas, her 2 sons Charly Donnelly and his wife Jennifer, Wayland Van Nest and his wife Monica, all of Brian, Texas. Douglas Smith and his wife Lisa of San Angelo and their 2 children Ryan and Lauren Smith. 2 greatgrand children, Garrett Donnelly and Clayton Van Nest.
Wayland enjoyed hunting and fishing and taking his family on summer vacations throughout the United States and Canada.
At his death, he was the longest surviving member of the Sabinal Central Christian Church.
Graveside services will be held at the Sabinal Cemetery Sunday December 23rd at 2:00pm.
