Wilbur Berry

On the morning of January 29, 2018 Wilbur Dean Berry of Uvalde, Texas went to be with his Lord and Savior after a courageous battle with cancer. He is survived by his love of his life, Mary Berry, son Webb Berry & wife Michalle of Uvalde, daughter Deborah Kistler & husband Neal of LaVernia, six grandchildren, Justin, Cheyenne, JD, Grace, Claire, & Zachary, siblings Wilma McGill of Victoria, TX, Tommy & Millie Berry of Houston, TX, Donald & Lois Berry of Dayton, TX, Sue Thormeyer of New Braunfels, TX, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by daughters Angela Marie and Annette DeAnne Berry, and parents Elmo and Mildred Berry.
Born on September 21, 1933 in Sinton, TX, the 2nd eldest of 5, and raised during the Depression years, he learned a strong work ethic at a very young age helping support his family with jobs like running a newspaper route and milking cows before and after school. In his youth he also enjoyed running trap lines and adopting wild animals to raise.
He graduated from Sinton High School in 1951 as an outstanding athlete in football and basketball. He attended college at Southwest Texas University in San Marcos, TX, served 2 years in the United States Army, and returned to finish his degree at Texas A&I University in Kingsville, TX. He married his love, Mary, in 1959 and they were gifted with 4 children. He began his career with the US Department of Agriculture (Farmers Home Administration) and moved his family to Uvalde, Texas in 1970. He worked 30+ years with FHA at various locations while the family permanently resided in Uvalde. Due to health problems he took an early retirement and began to pursue personal interests such as buying and reselling used cars & trucks, spending time with family, and continuing annual hunting trips to the mountains of CO, NM, Utah and AZ.
His loves were his family, friends, hunting, humor, observing God's creations, telling stories with friends, playing his harmonica, dancing, and hearing good country music.
He was a loving husband, father, and PawPaw, a supportive provider for his family who loved to tease, joke, and laugh. A man of his word and honor and wisdom, a loyal friend to many, he could state the truth with ease and knew how and when to bring humor to any situation. He could be counted on to do the right thing and do it right. He loved to teach those who would listen and he loved to help those in need, at his wife's side. According to her he was the best dancer and the best looking guy on the face of the earth.
Funeral arrangements are through Rushing-Estes-Knowles Mortuary in Uvalde, Texas. Visitation will be Thursday, February 1, during business hours at the funeral home with a Rosary to be recited at 7pm. Services are scheduled for Friday, February 2, 2018 at 10am at First Baptist Church in Uvalde. Pallbearers are Justin Berry, Rick Riedel, Vick Tucker, Sammy Gugliotti, Jeff Korus, and Ben Elrod. Honorary Pallbearers are Buck Buchannan, Buddy Hopson, Glen Dyer, Bill Dragoo, Gordon Knight, Tony Schuchart, Ted Luce and the Coffee Crews at Julio's and Town House Restaurant.
