Willa Mae Bird

Willa Mae (Willie) Bird, 100, of Uvalde died September 24, 2024, at The Veranda Assisted Living.

 Willie was born in Mesa AZ on January 30, 1924, to Nellie (Daley) and Lafette Sanders, the youngest of six children.

She married John William (Bill) Bird on May 30,1942 in Phoenix AZ. They lived in the Phoenix area where their two sons were born, then moved to Uvalde in 1950 where their daughter was born the following year.

 Willie was a stay at home mom until 1966 when she went to work as a police dispatcher for the Uvalde Police Department. In 1975 she began working in the tax office at the Uvalde Courthouse. She retired in 1986 to care for her ailing husband. She is survived by sons Ronny Bird of Boerne, Ricky Bird (Debra) of Boerne, Renee Bird Shackleford of Mill Creek OK; four grandsons David Bird (Laura) of Boerne, Brandon Bird (Anna) of Duluth MN, Brad Shackleford of Houston and Bryan Shackleford of Dallas. Four great grandchildren, Brittany (Travis) Pettit of Spring Branch, Bryson Bird of Boerne, Sarah Bird and William Bird of Duluth. Two great- great grandsons, Robert Bird of Duluth and Emerson Pettit of Spring Branch.

 She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and siblings. Also daughters-in-law Susan Bird and Yolanda Bird and son-in-law Ronnie Shackleford.

Graveside services will be held Saturday at 10:00 am on September 28, 2024 at the Uvalde Cemetery
