Wilson Ryland

Wilson Douglas Ryland was born in Uvalde, Texas to Mont Harvey and Mary Addie (Boyd) Ryland on December 13, 1917 and passed from this earthly life into the arms of his Lord on Friday, August 7, 2015. He married Margaret Elizabeth Phillips on June 25, 1939 in Pattison, Texas. They were blessed with three children: Sue Elizabeth McFatter (John), Rita Jane Crow von Luebbert (Harland), and Douglas Horace Ryland (Linda); seven grandchildren: David Wayne McFatter (Laura), Sue Elaine Beto (Kenneth), Catherine Janet McFatter, John Wesley McFatter, Kathleen Marisa Finley (Stephen), Wilson Davis Ryland (Amy), Chessie Jean Ross (Justin), Cody Ryland; seventeen great grandchildren: Jennifer Rae Jones (Jimmie), Jeffrey Scott McFatter (Crystal), Trey Quentin McFatter, Christopher Coyle Beto (Alyssa), Johnathan William Beto, Paige Elizabeth Franco, Peyton Alan Franco, Nicole Marie McFatter, Ashley Kathleen Collins (Jordan), Aidan Thomas Grigsby, Mallory Elizabeth Grigsby, Zoe James Eilis Finley, Corbin Davis Ryland, Hudson Cole Ryland, Ryland James Ross, Sarah Jean Ross; and nine great-great grandchildren: Julie Abigail Jones, Jimmie Edward Jones, III, Joslyn Marita Jones, Maddison Briann McFatter, Ryland James McFatter, Jaleigh Kathleen Hudzietz, Kiefer William Collins, McKinley Ann Collins, Jayden Cody Herrera.
As local general contractors, Wilson, his father and brother, M. H. Ryland and Sons, were instrumental in building many buildings in Uvalde as well as around the state of Texas. Wilson also raised and trained horses for heading and heeling steer roping. He team roped with many local ropers around the state and won the Old Timers Roping competition in Marfa, Texas as well as placing in the top levels several times. He gave a hand to all the young ropers to help them achieve and made many special friends among them including Cody Smith, Chip Woods, and Jimmy Chapoy.
Wilson proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII aboard the USS Alabama. He loved his friends and family with his whole being and loved his Lord Jesus Christ. He served the Lord as leader in the First Christian Church and in The Church of the Nazarene for many years as Deacon, Board Member and Sunday School Teacher with Brother Dwight Babcock and Sister Althea Williams, whom he loved and revered. For many years he participated in the Herby Ham Senior Citizen Center, enjoying his many friends, including Jack Molloy with whom he developed a deep friendship.
Pallbearers are David Wayne McFatter, John Wesley McFatter, Jeffrey Scott McFatter, Jimmie Edward Jones, Jr., Peyton Alan Franco, Cody Smith. Honorary pall bearers are Christopher Coyle Beto, Johnathan William Beto, Trey Quentin McFatter, Aidan Grigsby, and Chip Woods.
A special thanks to Wilson's caretakers over the years, Lorena de Luna, Anita de la Cerda, Estella Garcia, all the staff at Hospice of Uvalde and Amistad Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
He lived 97 long, full years and accomplished much. He is loved by his family and will be sorely missed. God speed and enjoy a well-deserved rest in the arms of the Lord.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 10, 2015 at 10:00 AM at Rushing-Estes-Knowles Mortuary with burial following in Hillcrest Cemetery. Wilson's grandson, Rev. Wil Ryland will officiate.
